About Us
Seacoast Furniture Companies (SFC) is an ever-evolving organization in an ever changing world. As the wooden shipbuilder evolved into making cabinetry or metal ships when their market changed for sailing ships, SFC will evolve as the marketplace changes so that we remain successful.
Our humble beginnings
Seacoast Furniture Company is a celebration of entrepreneurial spirit in America. It was started by my father Neil, in 1968. The company was started with a loan of $5,000 from my mother’s father that was obtained by securing a second mortgage on their family’s home. The first store location was in a rented space in a small church in Seabrook, NH. As in any new business the first years were the most difficult. The story is often told that my mother’s first bedroom set was sold to a customer before she received it.
Within several years Neil purchased the current location at 845 Lafayette Road in Seabrook. At that time the building, a former home, was in great disrepair. As resources allowed he repaired the property and expanded. Business flourished because of the personalized way in which customers were treated. In 1974 the store in Greenland, NH was purchased and renovated from a residence to a retail location. In 1987 the Dover, NH location was purchased and renovated.
Growing up in a family business, my employment start date should be at birth. I have swept the warehouse, worked on the delivery wagon, painted buildings, dug foundations, and even fixed a leaking roof in a hurricane. My role as leader of the company began in 1996. I then went on to purchase the company on January 1, 2000.
I have strived to add systems and improvements to move the company to the next level of success. At the same time it has been important to evolve to keep current to customer needs and market trends. In September 2003, the Greenland, NH location of Seacoast Furniture was closed and reopened as a design studio, The Uncommon Room.
While we change and grow we still must always focus on the one premise that makes us successful and got the business to where it is today. That premise is that each of our customers must be treated in a personal way and must be respected for their individuality and their unique needs. Our culture should always celebrate our customers as they have chosen us in a world with many choices.
